Flight Chaos as Winds Batter Canary Islands
The strong winds recorded across the archipelago on Thursday have forced the diversion of at least eight flights bound for the airports of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, according to sources from the Spanish airport authority, Aena. Adverse weather conditions, with intense wind gusts, have complicated aerial operations for much of the day, forcing route changes and affecting numerous passengers.
Fuerteventura Worst Hit
The greatest disruption occurred in Fuerteventura, where up to five flights were unable to complete their landing. Among them were two connections from Tenerife North and Gran Canaria, which had to return to their airports of origin. Furthermore, three other flights that had departed from Seville, Madrid, and Warsaw were diverted to Tenerife South Airport due to the impossibility of operating normally on the island.
Disruption Spreads to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote
Incidents were also recorded at Gran Canaria Airport, where a flight from Gothenburg had to be redirected to Tenerife South. In the case of Lanzarote, two aircraft originating from London Stansted and Dublin followed the same alternative destination. The widespread gusts have caused a day of significant travel inconvenience across the eastern and central islands.
