Tenerife’s TF-5 third lane contract awarded for €58.2m

The Canary Islands government, through its Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, has formally awarded the contract for the construction of the third lane of the TF-5 North motorway, on the stretch between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport (Los Rodeos), in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The work has been assigned to the temporary joint venture (UTE) formed by Ferrovial Construcción, S.A. and Asyota Asfaltos y Obras, S.L., for a final sum of €58,182,981.26 (IGIC included).

This award represents a significant saving of more than €8.2 million on the base tender budget, initially set at €66.4 million, while fully guaranteeing the required standards of safety and technical quality.

Widening one of Tenerife’s busiest stretches

Delivery of this strategic project will widen the carriageway from two to three lanes at one of the busiest points on Tenerife’s road network, substantially increasing the motorway’s capacity and improving traffic flow for the tens of thousands of drivers who use this artery every day.

New direct link to Tenerife North Airport

As well as widening the main carriageway of the TF-5, the plan provides for a comprehensive restructuring of the Guamasa and San Lázaro junctions, combined with the construction of a new direct connection to Tenerife North Airport. This infrastructure will separate traffic heading for the airport terminal from traffic continuing on towards the metropolitan area of La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

Under the current layout, all vehicles arriving from the north and heading for the airport are forced to continue as far as the San Lázaro interchange to turn around or gain access to the terminal, saturating that stretch of the motorway. The new configuration will create a direct route for cars coming from the northern part of the island, allowing them to enter the airport complex immediately.

Ending a long-standing bottleneck

This reorganisation will remove the long-standing bottleneck on the descending stretch, cut hold-up times and improve road safety across the entire Tacoronte and La Laguna area.
