Tenerife Launches Academic Year Immersion Programme in Ireland
The council of Tenerife has presented a new edition of its Island Language Immersion Programme in Ireland, specifically for a full academic year. This initiative is aimed at secondary school students in Year 11 (4º de ESO) who wish to study a complete course in Irish educational centres through a scholarship model, with official qualification recognition upon their return to the Canary Islands.
A Valued Pathway to International Education
The island corporation recently held an information meeting for participants in this edition, attended by the councillor for Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, and the delegated councillor for Youth, Serafín Mesa. Both highlighted this scholarship line as a key part of Tenerife’s educational internationalisation strategy. The programme aims to strengthen the communicative and multilingual skills of the island’s high-achieving students, while also fostering their autonomy, personal maturity, and cultural openness.
The extended stay in Ireland allows for full integration into the country’s academic and social environment, an experience that can prove decisive for the participants’ future academic and professional paths. Over its 13-year history and 12 previous editions, this initiative has enabled 2,989 students from Tenerife to have educational experiences abroad. Ireland has become a highly valued destination for families and students due to its education system, safe environment, and the quality of its English language teaching.
Programme Details for the 2026-2027 Academic Year
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the Cabildo is offering 30 specific places for the full academic year option in the town of Kells, Ireland. These form part of a total of 340 island-wide scholarships. Selected students will live with host families, study in local schools, and take part in activities designed to reinforce both linguistic and cultural immersion.
The programme also includes support measures before, during, and after the stay, with actions focused on personal development and family support designed to ease the student’s adaptation and maximise the experience. With this call for applications, the Cabildo reaffirms its commitment to excellence in education and to offering young people from Tenerife opportunities that broaden their horizons and better prepare them for an increasingly international context.
Building Essential Skills for the Future
The full academic year in Ireland is now firmly established as one of the most impactful proposals within the island’s language immersion scholarship programme, both for its academic impact and its contribution to students’ personal development. Councillor Efraín Medina noted that this scholarship allows students to “grow in an international environment, improve their command of English, and acquire essential competencies.” For his part, Serafín Mesa emphasised that the experience also strengthens the “autonomy, responsibility, and adaptability” of the young participants.
