Girl airlifted to hospital after near-drowning
A 12-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after a near-drowning at Anfi del Mar beach, in the municipality of Mogán, on Friday afternoon. The incident triggered a large-scale emergency response to attend to the victim.
Emergency services mobilised
The alert was received at around 1.23pm by the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) 112, run by the Canary Islands Government. Lifeguards reported that they had pulled the girl from the sea showing signs of drowning, and the necessary services were immediately activated.
The coordinating nurse from the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC) spoke with the caller and, based on the information gathered, dispatched a mobile intensive care ambulance, a basic life support ambulance, and a medicalised helicopter to the scene.
Serious condition prompts air transfer
On arrival, medical staff assessed and treated the girl, whose injuries were considered serious. Due to the severity of her condition, she was transferred by air to the helipad at the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria, before being admitted to the Hospital Universitario Materno Infantil de Canarias.
In the rescue and salvage operation, the necessary steps were taken to locate a landing point for the helicopter, which was ultimately set up on the beach itself. Firefighters from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium ensured the manoeuvre was completed safely.
Police secure the scene
Local police and the Civil Guard attended the scene, where officers secured the area and took charge of the relevant proceedings.
