Beating the heat away from the coast
There are summer days in Tenerife when the heat turns a night’s rest into a succession of open windows and a hunt for the coolest corner of the house. The beach then seems the obvious answer, but the island’s geography offers another possibility: leave the coastline behind and gain altitude. Tenerife packs enormous differences in elevation into very short distances. Simply leave some of its coastal areas behind and start climbing towards the midlands, and the landscape, vegetation and atmospheric conditions all change. From the dry surroundings of Vilaflor to the green areas of the north, there are several places worth considering when looking for a different escape during the summer.
Vilaflor and La Escalona: the south’s rural heart
Vilaflor de Chasna is probably the most recognisable name when thinking of escaping the coast for the heights of Tenerife. The landscape changes long before you arrive. The road climbs towards an environment of pine forest and mountain that has little in common with the tourist resorts several kilometres below. Its location also makes the municipality a privileged gateway to the upper areas of Tenerife.
A trip here can simply be planned for the afternoon: lunch, a stroll through the old town centre, and waiting for the sun to begin to disappear. And for those who want to get even further away from the usual spots, the municipality hides small hamlets and farmsteads that reveal a much more rural side of southern Tenerife. One of these is La Escalona, which allows you to move away from the better-known image of Vilaflor’s centre and seek tranquillity in the upper midlands. It is an interesting alternative precisely because it goes more unnoticed. It lacks the bustle of the big coastal tourist destinations and retains a residential, rural character. The plan here is almost the opposite of a beach day: mountain road, gentle walk and inland scenery.
Woodland escapes in the north
In the north, a completely different alternative appears. Aguamansa, in La Orotava, allows you to venture into a forested landscape of upper midlands where the ocean is no longer the main feature. It is one of the most attractive options for those who associate summer rest with pines, trails and shade rather than parasols. What’s more, it allows you to build an escape through the Orotava Valley that gradually gains height, moving from the town centre and agricultural areas up towards the mountain.
Far less obvious for those visiting Tenerife for the first time is Erjos, in the Los Silos area. Its position in the north-west midlands reveals another of Tenerife’s climatic and scenic contrasts. Here, the grand hotel boulevards disappear and a rural island emerges, marked by mountains, paths and vegetation. This very lack of fame can become its main draw for those seeking a quiet escape, especially if the aim is not to find crowded activities but to switch off for a few hours from the coastal summer.
Practical options near the capital
It is not always necessary to cross half the island. La Esperanza, in El Rosario, offers one of the most practical alternatives for those setting out from Santa Cruz or La Laguna. The influence of the trade winds and the proximity of the mountain explain a landscape where clouds and humidity can appear even when other parts of Tenerife have completely clear skies. That means it is not necessarily the destination for those seeking sun. But that is precisely part of its appeal when the goal is to swap the mugginess for a mountain and midland atmosphere.
El Tanque and the hidden north-west
El Tanque completes this other Tenerife that moves away from the usual summer postcard. Situated in the north-west and far from the big tourist hubs of the south, it allows for a rural escape that can be combined with other points on this side of the island. On days under the influence of the trade winds, the contrast between Tenerife’s different slopes can be especially striking: while some areas remain clear, others receive cloud and humidity.
A word of caution on the heat
Here, too, it is worth avoiding too simple a rule. The high areas of Tenerife are not protected against episodes of extreme temperatures. When the Canary Islands receive warm air from the African continent, the midlands can register very high values and humidity can plummet. In those circumstances, heading uphill in search of coolness can have exactly the opposite effect. For that reason, the weather forecast should be consulted before choosing a destination.
In favourable conditions, however, Vilaflor, La Escalona, Aguamansa, Erjos, La Esperanza or El Tanque offer something that is especially tempting in the middle of August: discovering that summer in Tenerife can change completely simply by taking a road inland.
