Drago tree comes down in historic La Laguna
One of the two dragon trees standing in front of the main entrance to La Laguna Cathedral came down on the night of Saturday 15 August 2026. Witnesses say the tree, the larger of the two specimens in this part of the historic centre, gave locals a fright but caused no personal injuries.
The area has been cordoned off following the intervention of the Local Police. The canopy struck a single-storey house, but initial reports suggest no significant damage was caused to the property.
Second major loss on Tenerife this year
This is the second large dragon tree to fall on Tenerife in 2026. The previous case was the well-known Drago de San Francisco – also called the Buenpaso or San Francisco cemetery dragon tree – in Los Realejos, an even larger specimen standing 17 metres tall and estimated to be around 200 years old. That tree came down on 4 March, damaging several parked vehicles in the area.
Regarding Saturday’s incident in La Laguna, parks and gardens technicians will examine the site in the coming hours to establish what may have caused the collapse. The cathedral dragon tree stood over 10 metres tall and was noted for its slender, spindly growth habit.
Concerns for another landmark tree
Close to the cathedral, another dragon tree is threatening to fall but remains standing. The emblematic specimen in Plaza de la Junta Suprema has become a source of concern for residents due to its visible tilt, and neighbours in the historic centre have called for it to be fenced off and propped up as a precautionary measure.
