Contract awarded for TF-5 third lane
The Canary Islands Ministry of Public Works has awarded the contract for building the third lane on the TF-5 motorway between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport, in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to a joint venture formed by Ferrovial Construcción and Asyota. The works have a budget of €66,401,344 and will affect three kilometres of road.
Improving capacity on one of Tenerife’s busiest routes
According to the regional government, led by Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular, the project will improve capacity and traffic flow at one of the most congested points on the island’s road network. The intervention will widen this section of the TF-5 from two to three lanes in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, enabling greater traffic absorption and better driving conditions for the thousands of motorists who use this road daily.
New direct access to Tenerife North Airport
The project also includes remodelling the Guamasa and San Lázaro junctions, as well as building a new direct link to Tenerife North Airport. The government says this new configuration will separate traffic heading to and from the north and south, replacing the current single-access system with a more efficient structure featuring separate connections. Vehicles coming from the north will be able to access the airport directly via the new link, avoiding the need to continue to San Lázaro as they do at present. The Canary Islands Government claims this reorganisation will reduce traffic load on the most congested section of the TF-5 and contribute to significantly improving overall traffic flow.
PSOE criticises limited scope of works
The Socialist Party (PSOE) in Tenerife has strongly criticised the third-lane project, pointing out that it only covers three kilometres of road, whereas the party’s earlier proposal was more extensive, covering works from La Orotava to La Laguna. “We find it worrying and a complete rip-off,” said Tamara Raya, the PSOE’s general secretary in Tenerife, in an interview last April. Raya explained that under the previous project, traffic on the motorway would not have been interrupted during construction, but under the new plan, the government wants to shift the motorway’s axis and convert one of the lanes coming from Puerto de la Cruz into a Santa Cruz-bound lane, turning the general road into a motorway lane. For this reason, the PSOE general secretary called on the Canary Islands Government for explanations at the time. She also noted that 40% of the island’s road projects have not been carried out, while the mobility problem has become significantly more acute.
