Puertos Canarios to target megayachts in new port strategy

New port strategy to target megayachts and recreational boating

Puertos Canarios is set to dedicate a significant portion of its 2026-2030 strategic framework to diversifying activity across the Canary Islands’ network of regional ports. The document, which is still subject to changes, proposes attracting new services, better organising the use of public port space, and reinforcing the economic sustainability of the system.

Specific focus on megayachts, cruises and fishing

Among the lines of action included is a specific strategy to attract activity linked to recreational boating, medium and short-length cruises, fishing and megayachts. The aim is to generate more economic activity, boost employment, and improve the services available at the regional ports. The push for megayachts forms part of a wider strategy to make better use of the potential of each facility.

The plan proposes cataloguing the ports and defining their characteristics in order to build a differentiated offering tailored to each location, while remaining economically sustainable. This roadmap includes promotional activities, attendance at specialist trade fairs, and a more proactive effort to attract activities that can bring value to the surrounding area. The goal is not simply to expand uses, but to better organise available space and adapt the offering to specific demands from the maritime sector.

A diverse network of ports

The regional network combines fishing ports, shelters, maritime facilities and sports areas. This diversity means that some spaces can be oriented towards nautical services or stops for recreational craft, while others will maintain functions more closely linked to transport, fishing, or local activity.

Improved management and digitalisation

The strategic framework also includes plans to activate logistics land and improve the services provided in the ports. Puertos Canarios wants to establish quality frameworks for authorised or concessionary companies, with the aim of ensuring that economic activity is accompanied by better management conditions. Another planned measure is the regularisation of surface area occupations.

The port authority plans to digitalise its monitoring and move towards a more efficient administration of concessions, authorisations and permits. Social and environmental clauses will be incorporated into these processes.

Solid economic foundation

The strategy is built on an economic base that Puertos Canarios considers solid. According to the authority, net business turnover reached €16.35 million in 2024, with growth sustained over the 2022-2024 period. On this basis, Puertos Canarios aims to consolidate investments with returns, maintain a balanced system, and open up new opportunities for the blue economy across all the islands.

Puertos Canarios is a public business entity attached to the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Canary Islands Government, operating under the name of “ecopuertos autonómicos” (regional eco-ports), the authority clarified.
