Gran Canaria taxi services to get digital overhaul
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria, together with the councils of Telde and Ingenio, has begun coordinating and modernising taxi services at the airport by making their digital platforms interoperable and enabling real-time control of authorised vehicles.
Shared platform for real-time control
According to a statement from the island government, the agreement includes integrating the island-wide Transfer platform, managed by the Cabildo, with the SG-Taxi system used by the councils of Telde and Ingenio. This system allows authorised vehicles operating at the airport arrivals terminal to be monitored through automatic number plate recognition and automated access control.
The Cabildo has allocated 60,000 euros in funding for the development and implementation of the shared technological system.
‘A before and after’ for coordination
The agreement will improve the organisation, security and control of access to the airport passenger pick-up area by using a connected technological system linking the different authorities. Teodoro Sosa, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria’s Councillor for the Presidency and Sustainable Mobility, said the project marks a before and after in institutional coordination relating to public transport on the island.
“Having a shared, connected system will allow us to act with greater effectiveness, transparency and responsiveness to the mobility needs generated by a strategic infrastructure like the airport,” he said.
Collaboration hailed by local leaders
The Mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín, stressed that the agreement once again shows that the best way to move forward is through institutional collaboration and understanding between the Cabildo and the councils, adding: “Pooling our efforts to offer better services to the public and the taxi sector.”
Similarly, the Mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña Medina, said that by listening to the taxi sector and working hand-in-hand with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Ingenio council, positive outcomes emerge for the industry. “This is one of them: connecting ourselves administratively, a digital step forward, and above all, solving problems and meeting these demands,” he said.
