Tourists fined €1,500 for picking protected red tajinaste in Teide National Park

German couple caught red-handed in Teide National Park

Environmental officers from the Cabildo de Tenerife intercepted a tourist couple on Tuesday afternoon after they pulled up a specimen of the red tajinaste (Echium wildpretii) and collected several stones in the Tabonal Negro area within Teide National Park.

Reported by rural wardens

The alert was raised by the Rural Guards, who notified the officers deployed to the scene. Once there, it was confirmed that the couple, a middle-aged German married couple, had torn off the tajinaste and were also carrying several rocks from the area, according to information shared by the Natural Environment department on its social media channels.

Seizure and fines

Following the seizure of the items, the couple were identified and an official infringement report was drawn up. The individuals now face penalties of up to €1,500.

Preservation plea from the Cabildo

The Cabildo de Tenerife has used the incident to reiterate the importance of protecting and preserving the island’s natural spaces.
