Gran Canaria pushes for tourism to be taught in schools and universities
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria is pushing for the history and future prospects of tourism as the island’s economic driving force to be studied in schools and universities. To that end, it has produced a teaching manual on the subject, which was presented this Monday.
Entitled Gran Canaria: Continente temático en miniatura, una historia grancanaria del turismo (“Gran Canaria: A miniature themed continent, a Gran Canarian history of tourism”), the manual is the work of veteran local journalist Míchel Jorge Millares and has been published by the island council’s Department of Tourism.
A sector that generates 40% of employment in the Canaries
The aim of the initiative is for tourism — a key sector of the Canary Islands economy that generates 40% of employment in the archipelago — to also become part of education and classroom training, according to the president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales.
The corporation’s tourism minister, Carlos Álamo, justified the idea of the whole of society learning more about the sector because, he said, it has become an integrating axis for the island. He argued that the evolution of tourism and its adaptation to social, economic and environmental change have influenced the island’s development model and continue to do so, now with the goal of ensuring Gran Canaria remains a competitive, sustainable and attractive destination.
Tourism as part of the island’s future
Álamo added that, from that perspective, the Cabildo’s intention is for Gran Canarian society to understand that tourism also forms part of its future project. This approach was backed by the author of the manual, Míchel Jorge Millares, who said that within the education system the book is aimed at students from secondary school onwards, but that beyond that it is for the whole of society, which can benefit as a whole from gaining a clear, accurate knowledge of the activity.
Anyone interested in learning from the text can in fact get hold of it, as it can be downloaded from the Turismo de Gran Canaria website, Carlos Álamo announced.
