La Laguna’s Africa Day celebration: a cultural feast in May

Africa Day comes to La Laguna

La Laguna Town Hall, through its Festivals and Equality department, has organised an enticing programme to mark Africa Day. Titled Conexión África, the initiative showcases a modern, creative continent experiencing strong economic growth and brimming with highly innovative cultural offerings, according to a statement from the organisers. Running from 18 to 31 May, the schedule includes a film cycle, dialogues, and a showcase of gastronomy, fashion, art, crafts, literature, travel, traditional music and afrobeat, dance, percussion, a short story competition and a children’s area.

Grand finale in Punta del Hidalgo

The main event falls on Sunday 24 May at Punta del Hidalgo, promising a very special multicultural day – a celebration of diversity and an experience for the whole family. Highlights include food, dance, a fashion show, literature, Senegalese wrestling, and plenty of music performed by The Conqueror Project, Cheik Abdou, afro-flamenco star Sidy Samb, and afrobeat DJ specialists Julien Brown and Carla Sitha Vibes, who will also act as master of ceremonies throughout the day.

Film and dialogue cycle

On 25, 26 and 27 May at 7pm, a film and dialogue cycle will be held at Multicines Tenerife Alcampo, with the following line-up. Monday 25: Rafiki (Kenya), followed by a dialogue on the role of women in 21st-century Africa. Tuesday 26: Neptune Frost (Rwanda/United States), with a discussion on new politics and African leadership on the international stage. Wednesday 27: African Family Dinner (short film, Norway/Sudan/Somalia) and Les Voyageurs (Cameroon), accompanied by a special dialogue/workshop on myths and anti-rumour strategies.

A landmark event for residents and tourists

The organisers describe Conexión África as “a real coexistence experience with significant impact, a landmark event for the calendars of local young people and families, and a distinctive, original and unforgettable experience for any tourist visiting Tenerife on that day.” Further details of the initiative will be revealed on Monday 18 May at a press conference held at La Laguna Town Hall.
