Overnight costs confirmed for Altavista refuge
Residents of Tenerife will pay 29 euros per person per night to stay at the Altavista refuge, just metres from the Teide crater, while non-resident federated mountaineers will pay 56.80 euros and other non-residents 71 euros. These figures were confirmed on Wednesday by the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila (Coalición Canaria), who stated that this is the final price to avoid any confusion.
Socialists criticise failure to apply discount
However, the Socialist Group has criticised that, although an amendment to the Cabildo’s 2026 budget, worth 100,000 euros, was approved to reduce the price paid by Tenerife residents for staying at the refuge by 50%, the Cabildo’s governing team has not incorporated it into the final figure. The refuge is set to open this Friday, and for this reason, the Socialist Group has called on the Cabildo to implement the amendment, which was accepted, in order to halve the price to 13 euros.
The Secretary-General of the PSOE in Tenerife, Tamara Raya, stressed that the current price means a couple would pay 58 euros, and a family of four would have to pay 116 euros for a single night — an amount that could become an obstacle for many families wishing to enjoy this location in the Teide National Park. If the approved amendment were applied, the price for four people would be 46 euros.
‘Teide should be accessible to everyone’
“In our view, Teide is the main natural symbol of Tenerife, and we want all Tenerife residents to be able to enjoy it. The price of the Altavista refuge should not be a barrier for those who live on the island, especially for many families,” she said. Along these lines, she detailed that the money is already in the budget and that they are not asking for a new funding allocation, but rather for the Cabildo to honour a commitment and make the Altavista refuge more accessible for Tenerife residents.
Raya argued that this proposal reflects a different model for managing the island’s natural spaces. “We believe that those who visit us should make a greater contribution to the maintenance and conservation of facilities like this, while residents should have more facilities to enjoy a heritage that is their own. This is the same philosophy we defend when we propose a tourism eco-tax, a measure that Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular have rejected,” she commented.
Long delays in reopening
She also recalled that the President of the Cabildo announced in December 2024 that the Altavista Refuge would reopen during 2025, after tendering works with an expected completion period of five months. “However, the reopening did not take place until July 2026,” she pointed out. “After a year’s delay compared to the commitment announced by the President of the Cabildo herself, now it is time to also honour the commitment made to residents. The financial resources already exist, and the time has come to use them so that the price of the Altavista refuge does not prevent more Tenerife residents from enjoying Teide,” she concluded.
