Vodafone targets 97% 5G coverage across the Canary Islands by end of year
Vodafone Empresas brought together around twenty local business leaders and representatives from the Canary Islands government in Tenerife yesterday to present the latest progress on its infrastructure deployment plan and the role of 5G in the digital transformation of the archipelago’s productive sector.
5G coverage reaching almost all of the population
During the meeting, the company announced that it expects to reach 97% of the Canary Islands population with 5G coverage over the course of this year. This milestone positions the Canary Islands as one of the territories with the highest penetration of advanced mobile technology in Spain.
Strategic submarine cable project
The operator shared with attendees the key details of its 5G network expansion and the impact of the RING submarine cable project, a strategic infrastructure initiative designed to strengthen connectivity, capacity and digital resilience across the islands.
“Technology is the engine that will allow our businesses – from tourism to logistics – to compete on equal terms in the global market,” said Jesús Lombardero, Director of Major Accounts at Vodafone Empresas.
New use cases in telemedicine and smart tourism
The session also explored how low latency, greater network capacity and improved connectivity will drive new use cases in areas such as telemedicine, Industry 4.0 and smart tourism – sectors considered essential for the modernisation of the Canary Islands’ business landscape.
Vodafone maintains a continuous plan to expand its 5G network across the archipelago’s municipalities, bringing this technology to major urban centres as well as smaller towns, industrial estates, tourist areas and strategic locations.
Faster speeds and lower latency
This rollout will allow users, businesses and public administrations to access faster browsing speeds, lower latency and a more advanced connectivity experience. It will also serve as a foundation for developing innovative digital services in sectors that are key to the Canary Islands economy.
With this deployment, Vodafone reinforces its commitment to the digital transformation of the Canary Islands and contributes to improving the competitiveness of the business community, as well as modernising public services across the archipelago.
Network performance during blackout
The company also noted that its network recorded the best performance across the islands during the electrical blackout of 28 April 2025.
Agreement with Canalink for dedicated fibres
Adding to this progress, an agreement signed last year between Vodafone Spain and Canalink will provide dedicated fibre on each of the two new submarine cables in the RING project. This infrastructure will further strengthen the Canary Islands’ connectivity and ensure the capacity and resilience needed to meet the digital transformation challenges of the coming years.
With all these efforts, Vodafone Empresas is helping to consolidate the Canary Islands’ position as a digital hub in the Atlantic and a territory ready to face the technological challenges of the new economy.
