Friday: classic trade winds soothe the Islands

The Canary Islands are settling into a classic late-spring pattern. After a noticeable drop in temperatures, high pressure now dominates the region, bringing the familiar trade winds and pleasant daytime temperatures. Friday is a perfect example: mostly clear skies, a steady breeze, and no major surprises.

General conditions

Low cloud cover will be present on the northern slopes of the mountainous islands, sitting at around 1,000 metres altitude. On the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, clouds will also linger on the northern and western coasts but will tend to dissipate as the morning progresses. Expect plenty of sunshine on the summits and across the southern coasts of all islands.

Wind will blow from the northeast, moderate in strength, with stronger gusts — potentially reaching or exceeding 70 km/h — at the northwest and southeast extremes of the more mountainous islands. A slight drop in temperatures is forecast through to Sunday.

The Atlantic will be rough along northern coasts, with waves up to 2 metres, while southern shores will see gentler conditions, with waves staying below 1 metre.

Island-by-island forecast

Tenerife

A sea of clouds at around 1,000 metres, thickest at dawn and dusk. A spot of drizzle cannot be ruled out near these cloud banks, but elsewhere the skies will be clear. Temperatures are lower than recent days, and the wind will be noticeable on the southeast coast.

Gran Canaria

Strong gusts are expected on the western side and along the southeast coast. Cloud cover will be limited to the northern half, leaving the rest of the island under sunny skies. Temperatures will range between 19 and 22 degrees.

Lanzarote

Moderate trade winds will blow across the central and southern parts. Clouds will gather on the northern and western coasts but will lose consistency through the day. The rest of the island will enjoy sunshine. Temperatures in Arrecife will range between 18 and 25 degrees.

Fuerteventura

The day starts with abundant cloud cover, but it will gradually clear and pull away from the coast, allowing the sun to take over. Moderate trade winds. Temperatures will range between 17 and 25 degrees.

La Palma

Scattered clouds at higher altitudes on the northern and eastern sides. Clear spells will appear after midday. The western side will remain mostly clear. The wind will pick up, particularly in exposed areas.

La Gomera

Gusts could reach 70 km/h on the northwest and southeast of the island. Cloud cover will be confined to the north. Temperatures will sit between 19 and 23 degrees.

El Hierro

A few clouds near the capital at dawn and dusk, but otherwise mostly clear skies with some wind at the extremes. Temperatures will range from a cool 13 to a pleasant 19 degrees.

La Graciosa

Low clouds in the morning will gradually retreat. The wind will be moderate from the northeast, making its presence felt on the water. Temperatures will be in line with the rest of the eastern islands.
