Tenerife Struggles with Growing Traffic Congestion
Tenerife is becoming too small for its ever-growing number of vehicles. Queues, tailbacks, and traffic jams are now a common occurrence on the island’s main roads, forcing the Island Council to implement various measures to combat this escalating problem.
Express Tow Trucks to Ease Jams
In the coming months, the Tenerife institution will launch a system of express tow trucks to remove vehicles involved in accidents, aiming to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on key routes. This was announced by the President of the Tenerife Council, Rosa Dávila, following a meeting in Madrid with the Director-General of Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), Pere Navarro.
The new system will allow for a faster response to accidents, clearing vehicles in less time and preventing prolonged hold-ups, especially on roads with high traffic density.
Enhanced Monitoring for Key Roads
Furthermore, the Council and the DGT have agreed to strengthen the monitoring of the TF-5, one of the island’s most congested highways. The plan involves tracking over twenty kilometres of this road from the Road Control Centre to improve real-time information for drivers and anticipate incidents.
The island corporation also plans to tender for new technological equipment to gain a more precise understanding of events on the road network and facilitate decision-making.
Protecting Natural Spaces from Traffic
Another key part of the agreement is the regulation of traffic in protected natural areas. Here, collaboration between the DGT, the Council, the Civil Guard, and local councils will be crucial to prevent overcrowding and preserve the environment.
A Joint Strategy for Long-Term Solutions
The Council insists that the solution to Tenerife’s traffic problems lies in a joint strategy combining infrastructure improvements, mobility planning, and a reinforced public transport network. The introduction of express tow trucks marks a new step in the search for solutions to one of the island’s principal challenges: chronic road congestion.
