Ryanair flight from Manchester to Tenerife diverted to Faro

A Ryanair flight bound for Tenerife Sur was forced to divert to Faro, Portugal, after two passengers caused tension on board during the journey from Manchester. The airline confirmed that the crew requested police assistance before landing and that those involved were removed from the aircraft before it could continue its route to the Canary Islands, according to the British newspaper the Daily Mail.

Incident caught on camera

The incident occurred on 10 June and was filmed by several passengers. In the footage shared on social media, a man can be seen walking down the aircraft aisle, singing and dancing, while some passengers laugh and others shout at him to sit down or leave the plane. The most striking scene shows the passenger striding down the aisle in a defiant manner.

According to the images, the man moves between the seats, singing and dancing as other travellers look on and begin recording with their mobile phones. At one point in the video, another passenger appears to stick out a leg to trip him as he returns to his seat. Tension then escalates in the cabin, with shouting, insults and several passengers demanding that he sit down. Another man can also be seen standing at the back of the plane, apparently encouraging the situation. Moments later, someone shouts “sit back down” and an object is thrown over the back of a seat.

Zero tolerance policy

Ryanair explained that the flight from Manchester to Tenerife Sur was diverted to Faro because of the disruptive behaviour of two passengers. “The crew requested police assistance in advance, and the police met the aircraft on arrival at Faro airport and removed these passengers before the flight continued to Tenerife,” a company spokesperson said. The airline also insisted that it maintains a “zero tolerance” policy towards inappropriate behaviour on board and will continue to take measures to prevent conduct that disrupts the journey of other passengers and crew.

Impact on passengers

The diversion forced a tourist flight bound for Tenerife – one of the most common routes between the United Kingdom and the Canary Islands – to be interrupted. Although the aircraft was eventually able to continue to the island, passengers suffered a delay and a stressful situation caused by the behaviour of those involved. The video has generated thousands of views and numerous comments on social media. Some users called for tough sanctions against the passengers responsible, while others noted that, despite the incident, the flight eventually reached its destination without anyone being hurt.

Second incident in the same week

The case occurred in the same week that another flight bound for Tenerife Sur, operated by easyJet from London Gatwick, was also met by police after a disturbance in the cabin. In that second incident, the crew reported a disruption involving a group of 12 passengers. Air traffic controllers gave priority landing to the aircraft at Tenerife Sur and coordinated the presence of police on the ground. The plane landed without further incident.
