Travellers from Italy face checks in the Canary Islands

Border controls introduced at Spanish airports for travellers arriving from Italy have so far affected 37 passengers in the Canary Islands, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of the Interior. The measure came into force on 8 August and is expected to remain in place until 7 September. It follows Italy’s temporary suspension of the Schengen Area after the migrant crisis recorded in Ceuta on 30 July.

Tenerife South sees the most checks

Across Spain as a whole, officers had requested documentation from 6,148 people arriving from Italy by 1pm on Wednesday 19 August. The checks have been carried out on 565 flights, with 911 officers involved.

In the Canary Islands, Tenerife South Airport has recorded the highest number of identifications. Specifically, 31 passengers arriving from Italy on six flights have been checked. A further three travellers were stopped at Lanzarote across three flights, and two passengers at Fuerteventura. One person has also been identified at Gran Canaria.

National figures and major airports

The figures provided by the Ministry correspond to nationals of third countries who have been asked to produce documentation as part of these controls. The measure applies to Spanish airports and ports that maintain direct connections with Italy and involves the temporary reintroduction of border checks while the government’s decision remains in force.

Since the controls came into effect, 6,148 people have been identified at Spanish airports. Since Monday alone, 612 passengers have gone through the process. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport has seen the highest number of identifications during this latest period, with 293 travellers arriving on seven aircraft. Barcelona-El Prat follows with 190 passengers from nine flights. Checks have also been carried out at other airports including Bilbao, Seville, Málaga, Alicante, Valencia, Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca.
