A 50-year-old man had to be airlifted by helicopter from La Graciosa on Monday after being swept by a heavy wave at Playa de Las Conchas, leaving him with serious injuries. The incident took place in the early afternoon and prompted a response from emergency services, who treated the man on the island before his evacuation.
Stabilised before evacuation
Health workers from the La Graciosa health centre and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were tasked with treating and stabilising the injured man before preparations were made to move him, according to the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (112) of the Canary Islands Government.
Airlift to Lanzarote
Given the severity of his injuries, members of the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) carried out the air transfer to the neighbouring island of Lanzarote. The operation was supported by firefighters from the island’s Security, Emergencies, Rescue, Prevention and Fire Extinguishing Consortium, who assisted both during take-off and landing.
Hospital care in Arrecife
Once on Lanzarote, the man was taken by ambulance to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife, where he was admitted for medical treatment. The intervention allowed the assistance and evacuation operation for a seriously injured patient from La Graciosa to be completed within a matter of hours, a case in which medical access requires the coordination of emergency resources and air transport with Lanzarote.
