Koko-Jean The Tonics to open 10th Maspalomas Soul Festival
Koko-Jean The Tonics will open the 10th edition of the Maspalomas Costa Canarias Soul Festival on 17 July. The group, led by the charismatic Koko-Jean Davis – who is of Mozambican origin and based in Barcelona – will take to the stage at 8.30pm on San Agustin Beach, kicking off an intense weekend of music.
With a vibrant blend of soul, rhythm and blues, rock and roll and funk, Koko-Jean The Tonics have established themselves as one of the most powerful bands on the current music scene. After leaving Mozambique, Davis lived in Brazil and the United States before settling in Barcelona. There, she made her musical mark as the vocalist of The Excitements, a band she stayed with for almost a decade until founding her own group in 2019 alongside guitarist Dani Baraldés and bluesman and harmonica player Víctor Puertas.
Koko-Jean The Tonics’ performance will mark the start of a very special edition of the festival. With a track record spanning more than a decade, this event has become one of the essential dates for the genre in Europe and the largest free soul festival in Spain.
A decade of soul by the sea in Gran Canaria
Organised by San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council and directed and produced by DD Company Producciones, the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival returns from 17 to 19 July to the stunning setting of San Agustin Beach in the south of Gran Canaria. Attendees can enjoy open-air concerts and food in a unique, family-friendly environment.
Koko-Jean The Tonics perfectly embody the spirit of the festival: artistic quality, stage energy and respect for the roots of African American music. This was confirmed by their second album, Love Child, which delves into the purest soul sound and the social and musical atmosphere of the 1970s. Their presence on the line-up represents a luxury start to a commemorative edition that will bring together major national and international soul artists.
