Public conversation on a world in conflict

On 21 October at 7pm, the Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host a conversation with the Canarian journalists Nicolás Castellano and José Naranjo about the conflicts shaping international affairs and the transformations of the global landscape since the 9/11 attacks. The event will take place in the venue’s press room, with limited capacity and prior registration required.

Twenty-five years since 9/11

Entitled Un mundo en conflicto. 25 años del 11-S (A world in conflict: 25 years since 9/11), the meeting forms part of Estado de la Cuestión, a space for research and dialogue with the public integrated into the Laboratorio Galdós internacional 2026, a project of stage experimentation.

Castellano and Naranjo will analyse the changes produced since the 2001 attacks in the United States and the war in Iraq, as well as the journalistic coverage of current conflicts such as those in Gaza, Ukraine and the Sahel. The conversation will also address their consequences for global stability and the forced displacement of populations, a reality that connects these scenarios with the Canary Islands.

Record levels of armed conflict

According to both journalists, a quarter of a century after 9/11 the number of armed conflicts has reached unprecedented levels and is forcing millions of people to abandon their homes. Their reflections will focus on an international context in which, they warn, the use of force and violence against the most vulnerable have become the norm.

Who are the speakers?

Nicolás Castellano has been a journalist at Cadena SER since 2000 and specialises in migration, cooperation and development. He has produced reports in more than fifty countries and has covered humanitarian emergencies and disasters such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2011 Japan tsunami. His work has also given visibility to conflicts such as those in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan. In addition, he has reported on the arrival of migrants and refugees in Sicily, Lampedusa and the Greek islands, and he is the author of several books and documentaries.

José Naranjo has lived in Senegal since 2011 and works as a freelance journalist in West Africa. He is a regular contributor to El País, the magazine Mundo Negro and Radio Televisión Canaria. Among the issues he has followed on the ground are the war in Mali, Ebola epidemics, Boko Haram violence, terrorism in the Sahel and African migration routes. His career also includes coverage of political transitions and coups d’état in various countries in the region.

Part of the Laboratorio Galdós programme

The session forms part of the parallel activities linked to Sobremesa, the production premiered last June and co-produced by the Teatro Pérez Galdós and unahoramenos producciones. Directed by Mario Vega, the play featured Griselda Ponce, Marta Viera, Saray Castro and Rubén Darío in its cast.

With Estado de la Cuestión, the Laboratorio Galdós internacional aims to extend dialogue beyond the stage and open up a space for encounter between professionals and the public. Anyone interested in attending this session must register in advance at www.laboratoriogaldos.es.
