International theatre comes to Agüimes

The 39th edition of the Festival del Sur – Three Continents Theatre Meeting will bring a varied programme to Agüimes from 20 to 25 October, including productions such as El brote from the Argentine company Criolla, Españul by comedian Lamine Thior and Noche by Alejandro Sawa, performed by Teatro Micomicón. The programme will combine these stage productions with discussions on human rights, the premiere of a citizen-participation production and free activities in the streets of the municipality.

El brote opens the theatrical programme

One of the main draws will be El brote, starring Roberto Peloni, which will come to the Teatro Auditorio for three performances: on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 at 7pm, and on Thursday 22 at 9pm. The play, which has won awards including the A.C.E., María Guerrero and Estrella de Mar prizes, presents an actor who begins to feel the boundaries between fiction and reality blurring, and who asks himself who is directing the events of his own life.

Lamine Thior’s humour and a conversation on peace

The humour of Lamine Thior will be another of the standout events. The artist will present Españul on Wednesday 21 at 9pm at the Teatro Cruce de Culturas. Born in Senegal and raised in Algeciras, Thior draws on his personal experiences to explore identity, family expectations and prejudice through comic situations and moments of reflection.

The festival will also feature the Afghan journalist Khadija Amin and Kayed Hammad, who will take part in the conversation Puente por la paz (Bridge for Peace) on Wednesday 21 at 6pm at the Teatro Auditorio. Coordinated by journalists José Naranjo and Nicolás Castellano, the free-entry meeting will address the defence of Afghan women’s rights and the publishing project Menú de Gaza, which champions memory and identity through the region’s traditional recipes. Amin and the Hammad family will also take part in an event for the Gran Canaria Solidaria project on Thursday 22 at 11am at San Telmo, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Theatre tackling family, morality and identity

Among the theatrical offerings is Noche by Alejandro Sawa, which Teatro Micomicón will bring to the Teatro Auditorio on Friday 23 at 9pm. The piece portrays an authoritarian and deeply religious father whose obsession with morality and appearances ends up destroying what he seeks to protect: his own family. This performance will be followed by ¿De dónde venimos? from L’Om Imprebís Teatro on Saturday 24 at 7pm, also at the Teatro Auditorio. Inspired by a painting by Amazonian artist Rember Yahuarcani, the show combines different disciplines to explore what motivates our actions and which events shape our lives.

A community production and Canarian voices

Work created in connection with the festival itself will have its own space with the premiere of OR: tal vez la vida sea ridícula by Gabriel Calderón, performed by the Compañía Teatral Tres Continentes. Directed by Javier Lozano, the production will star amateur actors selected through an open call to the public. The performances will take place on Saturday 24 at 9pm and Sunday 25 at 1pm at the Teatro Municipal de Agüimes.

The programme will also include two Canarian productions at the Teatro Cruce de Culturas. Sobremesa, by Laboratorio Galdós Internacional, will be performed on Thursday 22 at 9pm, with a story set on Christmas Eve 2001 that uncovers a family’s secrets and tensions. Meanwhile, DES-estructurados, by Juventas a Escena, will open activity at this venue on Tuesday 20 at 7pm with a work in which music connects the lives of a teacher and several teenagers.
