Canarian documentary Benito Pérez Buñuel heads to Venezuela
Benito Pérez Buñuel, a film directed by Luis Roca and produced by Marta de Santa Ana, is to have its premiere in Venezuela. The news was announced last Thursday by the newspaper El Nacional, reporting on the press conference for the 30th Caracas Spanish Film Festival, which begins next Friday, 16 October.
As El Nacional reported, Benito Pérez Buñuel will share the bill with some of the most notable recent Spanish films, among them La bola negra, Spain’s candidate for this year’s Oscars, El ser querido, Los domingos, Cerrar los ojos and Mi amiga Eva.
A festival backed by the Spanish Embassy
The Caracas Spanish Film Festival is organised by Queirós Publicidad and the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela. It was presented last week in Caracas in the presence of, among others, the Spanish ambassador to Venezuela, Álvaro Albacete, and the festival director, José Pisano.
Benito Pérez Buñuel will open the festival’s screenings on Friday 16 October, with a second screening on Monday 19 October. It is the only Canarian production selected for the event and the first time a Canarian documentary has taken part in the festival. The venue for the 30th Caracas Spanish Film Festival is the Trasnocho Cultural auditorium, the leading reference point for film culture in Caracas.
Further screenings across Caracas
The Canarian feature film about the connections between Galdós and Buñuel will continue its tour of Caracas with two further screenings. On 20 October it will be shown at the National Film School and on 21 October at the Hogar Canario de Venezuela, an institution that is a reference point in Caracas thanks to the ties between the Canary Islands and Venezuela. Dayana Morales, the Canary Islands Government’s delegate in Venezuela, will be present at these screenings.
All the screenings of Benito Pérez Buñuel in Venezuela — the only place in the world outside Spain with a sculpture of Galdós — will be accompanied by a presentation and discussion with Luis Roca and Marta de Santa Ana.
Pride in a film made entirely in the Canary Islands
The producer, Marta de Santa Ana, said she was “very proud and happy that Benito Pérez Buñuel is having its premiere in Venezuela, a country so important to us, with a film produced entirely in the Canary Islands. Our success is the revelation of the connections between two great figures of Spanish culture who were not contemporaries, some of them for the first time, its visual richness, the depth of its research and also the love that has been poured into it and that comes across on screen. On this occasion, I want to thank the support of the Spanish Embassy, the Canary Islands Government Delegation in Venezuela, Fundación Mapfre and the Port Authority of Las Palmas.”
For Luis Roca, “it is a source of pride that the film continues to be shown at festivals, special screenings and film schools. In the case of schools, such as this National Film School, it is very important to me, because the film contains, hidden within one of its many layers, a ‘masterclass’ on contemporary documentary-making.”
A European Parliament first and a return to Gran Canaria
Last June, the film became the first Canarian film to be screened at the European Parliament in Brussels. The screening was attended by 200 people, including MEPs, embassy representatives, officials from the Canary Islands Government Delegation in Brussels, representatives of the autonomous communities and Canarians living in Brussels.
“But as lovely as that was, it is that the film has served as the subject of exhibitions and seminars in secondary and university education,” says Luis Roca.
After returning from Venezuela, the Gran Canaria filmmakers will be present at a screening of the film at the Gabinete Literario, an institution that Galdós frequented and of which he is an Honorary Member. It will take place on Thursday 29 October at 19:00 and will coincide with the International Galdós Congress, where Luis Roca will take part in the seminar. Figures from the island’s business, political and cultural spheres have already confirmed their attendance.
A hybrid documentary with an international track record
Benito Pérez Buñuel combines the classic documentary with auto-fiction, mockumentary and animation. Having won three awards at international festivals, it has also been screened outside Spain in Argentina, the USA, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, China, the Philippines, Belgium, Italy and Ukraine. In Gran Canaria, it has been shown in all 21 municipalities on the island.
Those who have contributed to its financing include Televisión Española, Televisión Canaria, Telemadrid, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands Government, the Spanish Government, Madrid City Council, the Provincial Council of Teruel, Calanda Town Council, Crea SGR and Fundación Mapfre.
