A 53-year-old British tourist has died this Sunday after being rescued from the sea in cardiorespiratory arrest at Butihondo beach, in the Pájara municipality of Fuerteventura, according to the 112 emergency services.
Emergency response
The incident occurred at around 5.28pm, when the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) 112 of the Canary Islands Government received an alert reporting that a person on a lilo was experiencing difficulties in the water. Following the alert, CECOES deployed resources from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), including a fully equipped ambulance and a basic life support vehicle, as well as officers from the Civil Guard and the Local Police.
A private boat rescued the swimmer and brought him to shore, where a lifeguard from the beach rescue service found the man in cardiorespiratory arrest and immediately began resuscitation manoeuvres. Subsequently, SUC medical staff continued with basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, though sadly without success, and pronounced the swimmer dead at the scene.
Ongoing investigation
The Civil Guard has taken charge of the body pending the arrival of the judicial authority and is handling the corresponding proceedings, while the Local Police assisted the other emergency services throughout the operation.
