Tenerife to Canada: Air Canada launches first direct flights

Canada is now closer than ever to Tenerife

For the first time in its history, Tenerife will have direct air links with Canada, thanks to Air Canada. The flights will begin in October and throughout the winter season, residents and visitors will be able to choose from four weekly connections between Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofía) and the Canadian cities of Toronto and Montreal.

Two weekly flights to Toronto from 26 October

Those dreaming of gazing at the Toronto skyline from the iconic CN Tower or discovering the majestic Niagara Falls will be able to do so thanks to two weekly services to Canada’s financial capital, which start on 26 October. From 1 November, meanwhile, a further two weekly flights will depart Tenerife for those wanting to explore the magical side of a Canadian winter: wandering the cobbled streets of Old Montreal, soaking up its lively atmosphere and sampling one of the country’s most celebrated food scenes.

Tickets and visa requirements

Tickets will be available soon via the Air Canada website. Fares will start from over €700 per person, though prices will vary depending on the season and availability. Travellers to Canada will also need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), which is valid for up to five years.

Next-generation aircraft for long-haul efficiency

The new route will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, a cutting-edge, smaller aircraft designed for long-haul routes with greater fuel efficiency. The plane has capacity for 182 passengers, with 14 business class seats and 168 in economy, and features a redesigned cabin interior aimed at enhancing the travel experience.

A strategic push to attract high-spending visitors

This partnership between Air Canada and Turismo de Tenerife is part of a strategy to strengthen the island’s presence in the North American market and establish it as a leading destination for what the airline describes as “high-income, long-stay visitors with a strong preference for nature.” The data backs up this potential. In 2025, Tenerife welcomed 51,174 passengers from Canada and the United States, of which 7,130 came from Canada and 44,044 from the US. Within the Canadian market, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver were the main departure cities, while in the US, New York, Miami, Boston, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco stood out.

These figures also reflect a clearly positive trend, having doubled compared to 2019. The momentum has continued into 2026: between January and May, Tenerife’s airports received 22,168 passengers from both markets, of which 17,430 arrived from the United States and 4,738 from Canada.

A milestone for Tenerife’s connectivity

As if that were not enough, this new connection will join Tenerife’s international network, which currently links the island to 34 markets and 159 domestic and international airports. The arrival of Air Canada marks a milestone for the island’s connectivity, becoming the first direct air link between Tenerife and Canada. Lope Afonso, vice-president of the Cabildo (island council), acknowledged the significance, noting that with a 70% increase in Canadian travellers, this route will help “extend strategic connectivity” for the archipelago and “attract a type of visitor associated with the values the island promotes and needs.”

So, from this autumn, Tenerife opens a new gateway to the North American market, bringing the two shores of the Atlantic within less than nine hours of each other.
