Rescue Operation South of Gran Canaria
Maritime Rescue services rescued a total of 47 migrants on Saturday from a dinghy that was located sailing 27 miles south of Gran Canaria. The sighting was reported around 11:00 am by the fishing vessel Julio y Olga to the Maritime Rescue coordination centre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which then mobilised the rescue boat Urania, according to a statement from the state agency.
Fishermen Assist Until Help Arrives
The fishing boat kept the dinghy in sight until the arrival of the rescue unit, which reached the area around 13:00. The rescued migrants, mostly of Maghrebi origin, were reported to be in apparent good health. They are expected to arrive at the port of Arguineguín around 14:40.
Second Incident in 48 Hours
This is the second vessel carrying migrants assisted in the Canary Islands in just 48 hours, following another detected near El Hierro on Friday afternoon.
