La Palma leaders meet Baleària over island shipping future

La Palma and Baleària discuss island maritime links

The president of the Cabildo of La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez, has held an official meeting with the chairman of Baleària, Adolfo Utor Martínez, to discuss the new landscape for maritime transport in the Canary Islands following the Valencia-based shipping company’s recent acquisition of Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea.

Also taking part in the talks were the island’s transport councillor, Darwin Rodríguez, and Baleària’s managing director, Georges Bassoul. The meeting was marked by a spirit of cooperation and a shared search for joint solutions to meet the specific needs of the non-capital islands.

Commitment to cooperation and island interests

During the meeting, Sergio Rodríguez conveyed to Baleària’s top executive the absolute willingness of the island government group to establish a fluid and permanent relationship with the company, aimed at defending La Palma’s interests and ensuring the island maintains efficient, competitive maritime services tailored to its unique territorial characteristics.

“Maritime transport is an essential infrastructure for La Palma. Our priority is to guarantee that both goods and passengers have reliable, quick and competitive connections, because the economic activity, supply chain and competitiveness of our productive sectors depend directly on this,” the island president said.

Logistics and operational improvements sought

In this context, the Cabildo set out the need to strengthen the island’s logistics capacity, improve the operational flexibility of cargo services, and ensure planning that can respond effectively to the demands of La Palma’s business community.

For his part, the chairman of Baleària outlined the general lines of the company’s roadmap in the Canary Islands following the integration of Armas Trasmediterránea — a move that will make the shipping firm one of the main maritime operators in the archipelago.

Baleària’s strategic vision for the archipelago

Among Baleària’s strategic objectives are the progressive modernisation of its fleet, a commitment to more sustainable fuels, the digitalisation of logistics and commercial services, and the improvement of operational efficiency on inter-island connections as well as links with the mainland. The company has also shown an awareness of the specific reality of the non-capital islands and a willingness to maintain an ongoing dialogue with local administrations.

Strategic importance for La Palma’s recovery

For La Palma, this new institutional relationship takes on strategic importance at a key moment for the island’s economic recovery and consolidation, where maritime connectivity is a decisive factor in guaranteeing supplies, supporting mobility, and strengthening sectors such as agriculture, commerce, industry and tourism.

Both sides agreed to keep stable communication channels open to allow continuous assessment of the island’s operational needs and to explore future lines of collaboration that contribute to La Palma’s economic and social development.
