Gran Canaria hotel maid arrested over stolen gold necklace
The National Police have arrested a hotel maid who allegedly stole a necklace worth €450 from a tourist’s room at a hotel in southern Gran Canaria, and officers have managed to recover the jewel from a gold-buying shop where she had sold it for €100.
Investigation launched after tourist reported missing jewel
The operation against the employee, who is accused of theft, took place on 8 October and was carried out by officers from the Local Judicial Police Brigade at the Maspalomas police station, according to a statement issued this Friday by the Canary Islands Superior Police Headquarters.
The incident occurred on 28 September, when a tourist reported the disappearance of a gold necklace valued at €450 that she had left in her room. On returning to her accommodation, she found that the jewel was no longer among her belongings, with no signs of forced entry on the doors or windows.
Trail led to member of cleaning staff
Following the report, an investigation was launched to establish what had happened, which made it possible to determine that during the period in which the disappearance occurred, a member of the cleaning staff had entered the room to carry out her usual duties.
On the basis of this information, the investigators focused their enquiries on the worker and carried out various checks that led them to locate the necklace at an establishment in the town dedicated to buying and selling gold.
Police enquiries confirmed that the suspect had sold the jewel on the same day as the theft, receiving just over €100 for it. Once it was verified that it was the necklace that had been reported, the officers proceeded to recover it, taking the necessary steps to return it to its rightful owner.
