Maritime Rescue has towed a small boat carrying 41 men of Maghrebi origin into the port of Arrecife in Lanzarote after it was located sailing 26 miles northeast of the island, sources at the state-owned organisation told EFE this Saturday.

Third vessel to reach the islands in 24 hours

The vessel is the third to reach the Canary Islands coast in the last 24 hours, after two cayucos carrying more than 180 people, including 23 minors, were assisted on Friday.

The rescue of the fragile boat was coordinated by Maritime Rescue after it received an alert from the 112 Emergency and Security Coordination Centre, according to which a rigid inflatable boat had apparently set off from Sidi Ifni in Morocco. The rescue launch Salvamar Al Nair and the Helimer 211 helicopter were then mobilised, and the collaboration of a merchant ship in the area was requested.

Wooden boat spotted northeast of Arrecife

At 1.48pm the Salvamar Al Nair located the vessel 26 miles northeast of Arrecife, which turned out to be a wooden small boat. Those rescued are 41 men of Maghrebi origin, all apparently in good health.

The Salvamar has set course for Arrecife towing the rescued vessel, and its arrival in port is expected at around 3.20pm, the sources added.

Two cayucos reach El Hierro

This vessel joins the two arrivals on Friday. In the first, during the morning, Maritime Rescue accompanied a fragile boat to La Restinga when it was 2.4 kilometres off the coast of El Hierro with 77 occupants, including seven minors and five women.

The cayuco, which had been at sea for eight days since setting out from Gunjur in The Gambia, was carrying people from that country, from Senegal and from Guinea Conakry, according to emergency services sources, and two of its occupants were taken to the island’s hospital.

The other arrived during the afternoon, also to the island. It was carrying 109 people on board, including 32 women and 16 minors, and was sighted when it was 8 miles off the coast of El Hierro, emergency services sources told EFE. The cayuco had apparently been at sea for eleven days and those on board were from The Gambia and Guinea Conakry.
