Major Floating Dock to Transform Tenerife Port
The port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to receive the Hidramar Ultra floating dock on 20 April, a major piece of infrastructure designed for the dry-dock repair of large-tonnage vessels. This unit will enable maintenance work on Panamax-type ships within the archipelago, a technical capability previously unavailable in the region’s ports.
Epic Journey From Shanghai
The dock has completed a voyage of over 10,000 nautical miles from the HRDD shipyards in Shanghai, where it departed on 14 February. The transfer included passage through strategic points such as the Strait of Malacca and the Suez Canal, maintaining a speed of between 5 and 7 knots.
Technical Specifications and Capabilities
With dimensions of 240 metres in length and 48 metres in beam, the dock can lift up to 22,000 tonnes. It is equipped with eight centrifugal pumps that allow a ship to be docked in an estimated time of two hours, and a specialised control centre that monitors stability and structural resistance in real time during manoeuvres.
Boosting Maritime Services and Employment
The incorporation of this infrastructure aims to meet demand from shipping companies that require technical adaptations to comply with international energy efficiency regulations. Being able to operate under the Spanish flag and registered in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the dock positions the port as a maintenance centre on mid-Atlantic routes.
In terms of employment, it is estimated that the start of operations will generate 700 direct jobs, according to Hidramar. Furthermore, the activity is expected to attract demand towards the auxiliary industry and local logistics services, which will support the repairs of vessels using the facility.
