Earthquake detected off Fuerteventura
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded a 2.5 magnitude earthquake west of Fuerteventura during the night from Sunday to Monday, which was felt by the local population, the agency confirmed in a statement. The tremor occurred at 22:35 hours at a depth of four kilometres, with a latitude of 28.47 degrees north and a longitude of 14.37 degrees west.
How to stay safe during a quake
Although seismic activity in the Canary Islands is not usually particularly strong, it pays to be prepared and know how to react. The IGN has therefore issued a series of recommendations on what to do in the event of an earthquake:
Drop, cover and hold on – get under a sturdy table and hold onto it. Stay as calm as possible and keep your balance. Indoors, move away from furniture, windows and light fittings. Outdoors, keep clear of buildings, walls and electricity poles. If you are driving, stop in a safe place, switch on your hazard lights and stay inside the vehicle. If you use a wheelchair, apply the brakes in a safe spot and protect your head with your arms. In a crowded venue, shield your head with your arms and take cover under seats or tables.
