Series of tremors recorded in northwest Gran Canaria
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has registered ten small earthquakes with epicentres in the municipality of Agaete, in the northwest of Gran Canaria, since Thursday. The largest of these measured a magnitude of 2.1.
According to data published on the IGN website, the series of minor movements began on Thursday at 11.06am with a quake of magnitude 1.5. This was followed by the two largest tremors recorded so far: one of 2.1 at 1.11pm and another of 1.9 at 3.16pm.
These last two were the only ones felt by the local population, registering maximum intensities of II and III on the seismic scale — perceptible but causing no damage. The latest earthquake in the series occurred in the early hours of this morning at 1.57am, with a magnitude of 0.9.
According to the IGN, the hypocentres of these small earthquakes are located at depths ranging between one and ten kilometres.
