Earthquake recorded off Agaete
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has registered a new earthquake in Agaete, on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria, this Wednesday. The tremor, which had a magnitude of 2.8 mbLg, occurred at a depth of seven kilometres and struck at 08.05 local time.
The quake reached an intensity of level III on the twelve-point European Macroseismic Scale, meaning it was felt by the local population. According to the scale, a level III earthquake is perceptible to some people inside buildings. Those at rest may feel a gentle swaying or slight trembling, while hanging objects oscillate mildly.
Third tremor in four days
No damage to structures or buildings has been reported. According to the IGN website, the tremor was felt both in Agaete and in nearby municipalities, including Gáldar.
This is the third earthquake felt by residents in just four days, following a 1.4 magnitude tremor on Sunday 6 September, which reached an intensity of level II, and another of 2.3 magnitude on Monday 7 September, with intensity level III, before Wednesday’s event.
