Calima and rising temperatures across the islands
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast a Sunday dominated by intervals of medium and high cloud across the whole archipelago, with cloudy skies during the early hours in low-lying areas of the north of the higher islands. The most notable feature of the day, however, will be the arrival of calima, which will particularly affect mid-altitudes and south-facing summits above 800 metres, as well as the upper levels of the easternmost islands.
Thermometers to pass 30C in places
As for how temperatures will evolve, minimums will barely change, while maximums will rise slightly to moderately, more markedly in mid-altitude areas. This surge in heat will push the thermometers locally past the 30°C mark during the day in parts of the inland south of Lanzarote and on the southern and western slopes of Gran Canaria.
Strong north-easterly winds and rough seas
Winds will blow predominantly from the north-east, reaching strong intervals on exposed slopes. Aemet does not rule out very strong gusts during the early hours of the morning at the south-eastern and north-western extremes of the western islands. Higher up, at mid-altitudes and summits, the wind will veer towards the south-east and south, occasionally strong in exposed areas of the Tenerife dorsal ridge and the summits of El Hierro.
At sea, north-easterly winds of force 5 to 6 are expected, at times strengthening to force 7, producing rough to very rough seas offshore. By contrast, on the southern and south-western coasts, light variable winds and slight seas will prevail, accompanied by a northerly swell with waves of between one and two metres around the whole archipelago.
Forecast by island
Tenerife: Skies with medium and high cloud, rising temperatures in mid-altitude areas and notable calima in the south. North-easterly wind with occasional very strong gusts in the south-east and north-west during the early hours. Santa Cruz de Tenerife will see temperatures of between 22°C and 27°C.
La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro: Predominantly light calima at higher altitudes and rising maximums in south-facing mid-altitude areas. On La Palma, occasional light rain is not ruled out in the north-east during the early hours. San Sebastián de la Gomera will reach 28°C, Santa Cruz de la Palma 26°C and Valverde between 17°C and 21°C.
Gran Canaria: Cloudy intervals in the north at dawn and calima on summits and mid-altitudes in the south. A notable rise in maximums is expected inland, exceeding 30°C on the southern and western slopes. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, values will range between 22°C and 26°C.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: Mostly clear skies with calima at high levels. Maximum temperatures rising slightly, occasionally reaching 30°C in the inland south of Lanzarote. Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario will record minimums of 21°C and maximums of 26°C.
