New border controls
The first flight between the Canary Islands and Italy since border controls from Spain to the country came into force passed without any notable incidents. In fact, according to official Aena data, the Ryanair flight RYR-5823 departed for Rome-Fiumicino at 10.20 on Saturday morning – ten minutes ahead of schedule.
The smooth running of the operation may have been helped by passengers presenting themselves at check-in desk 403 at Gran Canaria Airport more than two hours before departure, which greatly speeded up the formalities. This is the margin that airlines recommend for international flights.
Passengers unaware of new requirements
In the queue were many young people, the vast majority of them Italian, some travelling in groups. Among them were Giuseppe and Emilia, who told this newspaper that the airline had not previously warned them about the new border control arrangements between Spain and Italy, which came into force at midnight on Saturday. They knew very little about the new conditions and attached little importance to them.
The Government Delegation has not responded to this newspaper’s request for information about the additional measures that were put in place to deal with the new bureaucratic requirements. Aena, for its part, declined to comment, saying the matter was not within its remit.
