Sunday: cooler air, strong trade winds, calima fades

A cooler Sunday on the Islands

Sunday brings a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly across the midlands and peaks of the higher islands. Despite the dip, southern spots may still see highs of 32-34°C. The calima in the upper atmosphere is clearing. Strong trade winds remain the main feature.

General conditions

Expect a moderate to strong northeast wind. The usual acceleration zones will see very strong intervals with gusts of 60-80 km/h. The Atlantic is slightly choppy off southern coasts, but rough to very rough on northern and open-ocean shores. Waves will measure between 1 and 1.5 metres.

Cloud cover will be stubborn on the north and northeast coasts of the higher islands. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa will see variable cloud on their northern and western sides. Elsewhere, it’s mostly clear with calima thinning out as the day progresses.

Tenerife

Daytime temperatures will fall sharply in the midlands and the peaks. The east can still reach a warm 30-32°C. Low cloud will cover the north and northeast, but the rest of the island enjoys sunshine. Calima in the upper atmosphere fades. The trade wind picks up strongly south of Anaga.

Gran Canaria

The classic ‘panza de burro’ cloud bank sits over the north and the capital, staying below 900 metres. The rest of the island gets plenty of sun, with upper-level calima retreating. Temperatures fall, with highs between 26 and 32°C. The trade wind blows with very strong intervals, producing gusts of 60-80 km/h on the southeast and west coasts.

Lanzarote

Low cloud passes across the north and west, while the rest of the island enjoys long sunny spells. A light calima is on its way out. Temperatures are slightly lower. The trade wind remains gusty.

Fuerteventura

Sunny with light calima easing off. Low cloud will affect the north of Jandía and parts of the west coast. Temperatures edge down slightly. A gusty trade wind persists throughout the day.

La Palma

A notable drop in temperatures in the midlands and peaks. The west sees the highest values, reaching 28-31°C. Low cloud dominates the north and east, with variable cloud elsewhere.

La Gomera

Very strong wind intervals are expected in the far northwest and east, with gusts of 60-80 km/h. Low cloud in the north, sunshine elsewhere. Temperatures are falling.

El Hierro

Cloudy intervals in the north and northeast, clear skies elsewhere. Temperatures drop, with highs of 26-31°C. The trade wind remains moderate to strong.

La Graciosa

Cloudy intervals will dominate, most compact in the early morning and late evening. Temperatures are pleasant. A moderate to strong northeast wind is expected.
