The Cabildo de Tenerife launched its caravan service at the La Guancha Logistics Centre this Friday, with the waste recycling point becoming the first public and free facility opened by the island corporation in the north of Tenerife.

Fourth facility on the island

The island government says this is the fourth specific infrastructure of its kind for such vehicles on the island, joining two in the municipality of Arona – at the recycling point itself and at the Malpaso Logistics Centre – and one at the Jagua recycling point in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. All of these are already fully operational, allowing caravans to empty black and grey water tanks and refill with fresh water.

The main aim of these small-scale installations, according to the Cabildo, is to prevent waste being dumped indiscriminately in unauthorised areas, which are often of high environmental value.

Caravan groups welcome the move

Caravanning groups were present at the opening of the new service, including representatives from Amigos AC Campers Canarias, Caravaning por Canarias, ACAT Tenerife, Caravaning Club Tinerfe and Caravaning Club Chinec. Juan Martín, a member of ACAT Tenerife, and María Ángeles Díaz, secretary of Amigos AC Campers and speaking on behalf of Caravaning por Canarias, thanked the Cabildo for launching the new dumping point, describing it as a step forward in addressing a long-standing demand from the community and improving services for motorhome users in the north of the island.

Also present was Blanca Pérez, the island’s councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies. She said the launch of these new service areas was “another step in the strategy we are developing to ensure that the growth of road tourism and the protection of our environment are compatible”.

According to the councillor, this commitment responds to one of the long-standing requests from the caravanning community, adding: “responsibly, we are offering infrastructure that is already delivering very good results during its first month, with more than 166 users between Arona and Jagua.” She stressed: “Tenerife needs these modern spaces to prevent uncontrolled dumping and preserve our natural areas.”

Mayor praises improved facility

The mayor of La Guancha, Alejandro Herrera Luis, highlighted that the new dumping area for motorhomes represented a further improvement to the waste treatment plant, expanding the services already offered there. “We are delighted to receive new improvements at this waste treatment plant. A few months ago we were here for other work that had been carried out, and today we are fortunate to already have a dumping area for motorhomes,” he said. “This new service expands an already wide-ranging offer that benefits not only the residents of La Guancha but also the whole district, whose municipalities use this facility,” he concluded.

Roll-out across the island

The Waste Department has drawn up a series of works and actions to create caravan zones at the island’s recycling points. The plan will culminate in every one of these facilities across the island network being operational, with both a black and grey water disposal point and a fresh water supply.

The Cabildo confirms that these new points have been well received during their first month of operation, with a total of 166 users – 69 at Arona and 97 at Jagua.

The Cabildo de Tenerife states that the initiative to open a service area for caravan waste is a proposal that will gradually be extended to all recycling points across the island, providing specific services for emptying black and grey water and replenishing fresh water.

The recycling points open at La Guancha, Jagua and Arona operate with the following hours: Monday, 8am to 4pm; Tuesday to Friday, 8am to 8pm; Saturday, 9am to 8pm; and Sunday, 9am to 2pm.
