Saturday night at the Maspalomas Soul Festival

San Agustin beach once again became the heart of European soul music this Saturday during the second day of the tenth Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival. Thousands of people answered the call once more for a festival celebrating its tenth anniversary, reaffirming its international prestige and its ability to bring together some of the great names in black music in a truly stunning setting.

A perfect setting by the Atlantic

As the sun dipped below the Atlantic and a pleasant temperature encouraged revellers to stay by the sea well into the early hours, the venue gradually filled with attendees from across Gran Canaria, the rest of the archipelago, mainland Spain, and numerous European countries. Families, tourists, and soul enthusiasts shared an evening defined by camaraderie, respect, and a common passion for live music.

Opening sets and a living legend

The programming kicked off with a set from Dr. Wampush, who expertly set the tone for the afternoon with a fine selection of vinyl, blending soul classics, rare rhythm and blues gems, and carefully chosen funk sounds. The first concert of the night came from John Ellison, a living legend of American soul and the composer of ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’. His performance was marked by elegance, a warm connection with the audience, and an emotionally charged delivery.

The power of Memphis on stage

From 10:00 PM, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame Band, led by Kurt Clayton, unleashed the full force of the legendary Memphis sound. Just ten minutes later, at 10:10 PM, they were joined by Shunta Mosby, Dani McGhee, and Candy Fox, completing a show of immense intensity that had the crowd at San Agustin beach buzzing. The energy continued with Karen Wolfe, whose powerful voice and stage presence captivated the audience once again, delivering a concert packed with soul, gospel, rhythm and blues, and funk.

A highlight with Lenny Williams

The night reached one of its peak moments with Lenny Williams. The historic vocalist moved the crowd with a performance full of elegance and vocal power, culminating in a rousing ovation for his rendition of ‘Because I Love You’.

The traditional Grand Finale

Following Lenny Williams’ set, the tenth Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival once again delivered one of its most iconic moments: the traditional Grand Finale. All of Saturday’s artists took to the stage together – John Ellison, Karen Wolfe, Lenny Williams, Shunta Mosby, Dani McGhee, and Candy Fox – accompanied by the Memphis Music Hall of Fame Band. They performed several soul classics in a unique and unrepeatable show that sparked pure enthusiasm from the crowd. This choral finale, brimming with emotion, togetherness, and celebration, rounded off an unforgettable night and once again reflected the spirit of artistic camaraderie that has defined the festival since its inception.
