Monday: summer sun, strong winds, and calima aloft
The Canary Islands kick off the week with a classic summer setup: plenty of sunshine, a brisk trade wind, and a light layer of Saharan dust hanging in the upper atmosphere.
Temperatures will feel warm across the board, with the heat turning up a notch on Gran Canaria, where local spots in the south and west could reach 34°C. Elsewhere, several islands have a chance of hitting 30°C, particularly in southern Fuerteventura.
A moderate trade wind (alisio) is blowing across the archipelago, accelerating noticeably in the southeast and northwest of the mountainous islands. On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the wind is strong enough to produce occasional very strong gusts, especially in inland areas and the southern half. A light ocean breeze will prevail along the west and southwest coasts of the larger islands.
Out on the Atlantic, seas will be rough. Waves will exceed 1.5 metres on northern coasts and will top 2 metres in the channels between islands. The stretch between Tenerife and Gran Canaria is particularly choppy, with northeast winds of 50 to 61 km/h (Force 7).
