Smart bus lane for the TF-5 motorway
The Cabildo of Tenerife is to implement a smart Bus-VAO lane on the TF-5 motorway (Autopista del Norte) between Santa Cruz and Los Rodeos. The project, which has now been put out to public consultation, will see the 9.7 kilometres separating both points upgraded at a cost of 6.2 million euros.
How the smart lane will work
During peak hours, the left-hand lane will be reserved exclusively for buses, taxis, motorcycles, and vehicles carrying two or more occupants. Outside these periods, it will operate as a conventional lane. According to forecasts, the measure will reduce journey times by around 20% from the North Airport junction towards Santa Cruz, saving motorists roughly ten minutes on the road. Heading from the capital towards Los Rodeos, the reduction could exceed 50%.
Average speeds on this stretch, currently around 50 km/h due to congestion, are expected to rise to approximately 70 km/h. The Bus-VAO lane will run between kilometre points 2.5 (near Somosierra) and 12.2 on the TF-5. It will incorporate intelligent transport systems to manage its operation in real time, including variable message signs, monitoring cameras, automatic control systems, and light beacons. These elements will inform drivers of the lane’s usage conditions and enhance road safety.
Expropriation for the third lane
Separately, the Regional Ministry of Public Works has begun the process of expropriating the nearly 8,000 square metres of land needed to build a third lane on the TF-5 motorway between Guamasa and the North Airport. One of the parties affected by the expropriation is Aena, the airport authority.
