Tenerife weather: Pope visit brings mixed skies and 30°C heat

Forecast for the papal visit

Tenerife residents will be looking to the skies this Friday, 12 June, to see if the weather holds for such a special day, as Pope Leon XIV visits the island. For their benefit, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning: cloudy skies in the north, light rainfall in inland areas, and rising temperatures. In fact, thermometers could reach 30°C in some parts of the island.

Detailed outlook for the island

Specifically, the forecast indicates cloudy conditions in the north below 500-700 metres, tending to open up into wide clear spells from the morning onwards. Elsewhere, it will be clear, with the occasional cloudy interval in the south during the early hours. Light, scattered and occasional rainfall cannot be ruled out in inland areas from midday, accompanied by intervals of medium and high cloud cover.

As for temperatures, they will remain largely unchanged on the coasts, with a slight increase inland, which could be locally moderate at the summits, potentially reaching 30°C in south-facing inland areas. Winds will be light to moderate from the north, with sea breezes on the south-west coasts. At the summits, a moderate south-westerly wind is expected, with strong intervals on exposed higher slopes of Mount Teide, where occasionally very strong gusts are likely.

Archipelago-wide forecast

Regarding the forecast for the archipelago as a whole, it will be cloudy in low-lying areas below 500-700 metres in the north of the islands, tending to open up into wide clear spells during the central hours of the day. In the interior of the more mountainous islands, light, scattered and occasional rainfall cannot be ruled out, accompanied by intervals of high and medium cloud cover. Temperatures will see little change or a slight increase on the coasts, which could be moderate in inland areas of the more mountainous islands. It is likely that 30°C will be reached locally in inland areas of south-east Fuerteventura, and 30-32°C in mid-altitude zones and south-facing summits of Gran Canaria.
