Tuesday: The peak of the heat
Tuesday looks set to be the hottest day of the current warm spell on the Islands. Thermometers could top the 40°C mark in parts of Gran Canaria, while the rest of the archipelago braces for a hot, hazy day.
General overview
The most extreme heat is expected in the southern and western midlands of Gran Canaria, where localised readings could reach or exceed 40°C. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote may also see temperatures hover near that figure in localised spots, while southern Tenerife should see a still-hot 34-36°C. The greener western islands will be slightly cooler.
Cloud cover will be scarce. Early mist may linger on northern coasts of the more mountainous islands but should quickly clear. Calima (Saharan dust) will increase in density and spread to all islands, reducing air quality.
Winds that have been strong in recent days will ease considerably. The Atlantic will remain unsettled, however, with a ground swell bringing waves of under 2 metres to northern coasts and a rough ocean with around 1.5-metre waves in the south.
Tenerife
Clouds will gather in the north, and a local afternoon shower cannot be completely ruled out in upland areas. Santa Cruz will see temperatures between 25°C and 33°C, but the southern midlands will be significantly hotter.
Gran Canaria
The hottest spots will be inland in the south and west, where the mercury may exceed 40°C. The capital and northern zones will be fresher. Expect scattered clouds in the north and the presence of calima.
Lanzarote
A few clouds in the west, calima, and little wind. Arrecife will range from 24°C to 34°C, with the centre of the island potentially reaching 36°C.
Fuerteventura
A mostly clear day, with perhaps a few clouds early on. Calima and heat will dominate. Puerto del Rosario will see 24-33°C, with higher readings in the southern interior.
La Palma
Clouds will sit over the north-northeast of the island. Elsewhere, it will be calima and sunshine. The capital will see temperatures between 22°C and 28°C.
La Gomera
San Sebastián will see highs of 32°C, though interior areas could climb higher. Some cloud in the north and calima are expected.
El Hierro
A hot day with lower humidity. Clouds will be scarce, possibly appearing in the north. Winds will ease. Valverde will see temperatures ranging from 22°C to 26°C.
La Graciosa
The smallest inhabited island will start with some insignificant low cloud, which will quickly disappear. Calima will increase throughout the day alongside the heat. Temperatures will hover around 30°C.
