Cooler start to the weekend in Tenerife
Tenerife begins this Saturday, 15 August, with a drop in temperatures that will be especially noticeable in mid-elevation areas and higher zones facing south and west. However, the heat will not disappear entirely, with some spots in the south of the island still expected to reach 30ºC.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecast also keeps cloud cover in place across northern Tenerife, where there is a low probability of weak, occasional showers, particularly in the midlands. Elsewhere on the island, skies will be mostly clear or partly cloudy, although intervals of cloud may develop in the southern midlands during the afternoon.
Where the mercury will fall
The temperature drop will be more pronounced in mid-elevation areas and summits, especially on south- and west-facing slopes. Elsewhere, falls will be more modest, while the northern coasts will see little change. Even so, low-lying areas of the south and the south-eastern fringe of the metropolitan area could still reach 30ºC.
Overnight temperatures will offer little relief in the warmest spots, with minima barely dipping below 24-26ºC in the early hours. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is forecast to see a low of 22ºC and a high of 29ºC.
Wind and sea state
The trade winds will blow moderately from the north-east, with strong intervals at the south-eastern and north-western tips of Tenerife and on the southern slopes of the metropolitan area. Aemet also notes the possibility of locally very strong gusts, especially during the early hours. South-western coasts will see light breezes, while at higher elevations on Mount Teide the wind will be moderate with strong intervals from the west.
There will also be a swell of 1 to 2 metres from the north, particularly in coastal waters around Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera. Winds along the Canarian coastline are expected from the north or north-east at force 5 or 6, occasionally 7, with moderate to rough seas.
Change felt across the archipelago
The shift will also be noticeable across the rest of the islands. Gran Canaria will see cloudy skies in the north and the possibility of light drizzle in mid-elevation areas from dusk. Temperatures will fall, though parts of the south and west, along with the Tejeda basin, will still reach 30-32ºC. In the south-east, minima will sit between 24 and 26ºC.
La Gomera will have cloud cover in the north and a chance of weak precipitation, while the south could still touch 30ºC. La Palma will see cloudy skies in the north and east, with the possibility of weak, occasional showers. On El Hierro, cloudy intervals will be concentrated mainly in the north, with temperatures dropping in inland areas.
Lanzarote, meanwhile, will see little change and could reach 30ºC in the south-east, while Fuerteventura will experience a slight drop in temperatures, although some spots in the south-east may still hit 30-32ºC.
