Jet2 flight from Tenerife to Birmingham makes emergency landing after pilot

Emergency landing after mid-flight heart attack

A Jet2 flight travelling from Tenerife to Birmingham was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal after one of its pilots suffered a heart attack while the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of over 9,000 metres (30,000 feet).

According to the British newspaper the Daily Mail, the incident occurred on Thursday aboard flight LS1266, when the pilot began to feel unwell mid-journey. The situation prompted the cabin crew to request medical assistance from among the more than 200 passengers on board.

Diversion to Porto

The aircraft, an Airbus A321 carrying 220 people, was diverted to Porto airport, where it made an emergency landing in the early hours of Friday. Upon landing, medical services rushed to the runway to attend to the pilot, who was subsequently taken to a hospital in the Portuguese city for medical treatment.

Passengers remained on board the aircraft for more than an hour while the emergency response unfolded and arrangements were made to continue the journey. The airline chose not to accommodate travellers in Porto and instead flew in a replacement pilot from Manchester to complete the operation, allowing passengers to continue their journey to Birmingham.

Jet2 statement

In a statement, Jet2 confirmed that the flight was diverted due to the pilot’s indisposition. “Flight LS1266 from Tenerife to Birmingham was diverted to Porto because one of the pilots became unwell,” the airline said. The company also assured that “at no point was the safety of the flight compromised” and apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected delay.
