Motorhome groups rally in Tenerife
Two motorhome associations are mobilising this Friday and Saturday in Tenerife to raise awareness of the situation facing the campervan community in the Canary Islands. The protest, organised by the G3A Federation in coordination with ACAT Tenerife, is intended as a united, peaceful and open demonstration for all members of the group.
Hundreds of vehicles expected
Organisers are confident of a successful turnout, with around 500 vehicles already committed to the planned route. They have also invited other associations, clubs and individual motorhome owners to join. The G3A Federation stressed that the main objective is to make the situation of the community in the Islands visible through unity, focusing on campervan users as a whole rather than any individual prominence.
Gathering and route details
A preliminary gathering will take place on Friday from 3pm at the El Gomero service station in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife, where organisation and overnight parking will be facilitated. The protest through various locations on the island will take place on Saturday from 11am, departing from that same point. Although the route is still pending final approval from the Government Sub-delegation, the plan is to pass through Granadilla, Los Abades (Arico), Candelaria (along the Rambla de Los Menceyes) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, returning via the same itinerary with various regrouping points to ensure safety and visibility.
A call for unity and visibility
The organisation insists that this is a peaceful, orderly mobilisation coordinated with the authorities, aimed at strengthening the voice of the community. “This demonstration comes from a place of unity. It is not about individual prominence, but about giving visibility to a reality that affects the whole of the motorhome community in the Canary Islands. We encourage everyone to take part and join a mobilisation that seeks to consolidate a cohesive image,” the organisers said.
Growing restrictions and lack of facilities
Among the issues raised, Juan Martín, president of ACAT and a member of the G3A Federation, told Canarias Ahora that motorhome owners are complaining about the growing lack of parking and designated areas for such vehicles, including environmentally equipped sites for discharging waste water, as well as other restrictions that prevent them from travelling properly. Martín hopes that at least 500 motorhomes will protest this Saturday, noting that his federation alone has a thousand members, typically two people per vehicle, and that the other coordinating entity has around 400 members.
‘Persecution’ of motorhome owners
“Councils are increasingly restricting parking spaces, making them between 1.80 and 4 metres long, which prevents a standard motorhome, which is usually longer, from fitting, as well as a normal large van,” Martín lamented. He also complained about what he described as growing persecution, recalling that last weekend around thirty motorhomes were evicted from the Tenerife municipality of Candelaria. For this reason, among other banners and slogans, protesters are calling for an end to that persecution, emphasising that the community is far from being a problem. “We represent an opportunity for the places that welcome us because we stimulate the local economy, we consume and we respect the sites,” Martín added.
