Tenerife hosts its first HYROX event
Tenerife is set to become one of the international capitals of fitness this weekend. The Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz will host the first ever HYROX competition in the Canary Islands, running from this Friday until Sunday, 6 September. The event is expected to bring together around 10,000 athletes representing more than 100 nationalities, including over 3,000 competitors from the islands themselves.
The arrival of HYROX marks the Canary Islands’ debut on the calendar of a discipline born in Germany in 2017. Since then, the sport has experienced explosive growth, becoming one of the major phenomena in competitive fitness. Tenerife now joins an international circuit that will feature more than 150 races in cities around the world this season.
What to expect over the three days
Over the course of three days, the Gran Nave of the Recinto Ferial will be transformed into a vast sporting arena where participants must complete a demanding course combining eight kilometres of running with eight functional exercises. The competition is designed to accommodate athletes of different ages and abilities, with individual, doubles, Pro and relay categories.
The programme kicks off this Friday at 2pm with the first HYROX Men heats. The afternoon will see doubles categories, women’s races and mixed sessions follow in succession, with activity continuing until 8:30pm. Saturday promises the most extensive schedule of the weekend. The first starts get underway at 8am, with various men’s and women’s categories competing throughout the day, including the Pro divisions. The day will conclude with the Pro category podium ceremony, scheduled for 9:30pm. Sunday’s events begin at 8am with doubles races and the women’s and men’s categories. The closing stages will feature the relay heats from 5:50pm, with the overall prize-giving ceremony set for 8pm.
A boost for sporting tourism
Beyond the competition itself, the staging of HYROX represents fresh momentum for Tenerife’s strategy as a sporting tourism destination. The presence of thousands of athletes, companions, coaches and spectators throughout the weekend will help showcase the island to an international community closely linked to sport, wellbeing and healthy living.
The Vice-President of the Cabildo and Councillor for Tourism, Lope Afonso, has highlighted that the event marks a milestone in positioning Tenerife as an international destination for sports tourism. Meanwhile, the CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, has pointed to the opportunity it presents for connecting the island with a growing international community. Organisers have also welcomed the backing of Canarian and local institutions in making HYROX’s arrival in the islands possible.
The event also marks the first time the Canary Islands has been added to the national competition calendar, following HYROX’s presence in Spanish cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Málaga. Spanish athlete Manuela García, currently a member of the Elite 15, has praised Tenerife’s conditions for sporting practice, highlighting factors such as the climate, hours of sunshine and the variety of environments available for training.
How the competition works
HYROX maintains the same competition format regardless of the host city. Athletes alternate one kilometre of running with each of the eight functional exercise stations, until completing the full eight kilometres and eight exercises. This structure allows competitors of different standards to tackle the same course and compare their results—one of the key elements that has driven the discipline’s international expansion.
Participants must also comply with specific rules during the race. These include correctly counting their running laps and only entering the exercise zone, known as the Roxzone, after properly completing the designated route. Organisers have also established a protocol for athlete accreditation. Check-in opens 90 minutes before the first start of each division, and participants must present their original ID card or passport along with the QR code from their registration.
The entry fee includes individual timing with split times for each station, refreshments, points counting towards age group rankings and the official Finisher patch. Participants will also have access to professional photographs of the competition through a facial recognition system.
With the arrival of HYROX, Tenerife faces a weekend in which sport, competition and tourism go hand in hand, in an event aiming to turn the island’s capital into one of the great international meeting points for fitness over three days.
