Islands unite for Pride weekend
The islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria hosted large-scale demonstrations this Saturday to mark LGTBI+ Pride, with main events taking place in the municipality of La Orotava and in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Organisers highlighted that beyond the celebration, this was an act of remembrance, resistance, and a reaffirmation of hard-won rights.
Two thousand march in La Orotava
In Tenerife, the island-wide march was held in La Orotava, bringing together around two thousand people under the slogan: “Though they want us on the margins, Pride sets the course.” The route began at the Doña Chana Cultural Park and ended at the Town Hall Square. The call to action was backed by various Tenerife-based groups, including Aperttura, Diversas, Transboys, Transwomen, and the Pedro Zerolo Foundation.
Minute’s silence and political demands
At the close of the event, a manifesto was read out and a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela. During the gathering in La Orotava, organisations warned about the advance of the far-right and criticised the entry of the Vox party into the municipal governments of Arona and Granadilla de Abona. On an institutional level, they called for a State Pact to curb hate speech and demanded the creation of housing resources for members of the community experiencing homelessness. The associations also defended the importance of decentralising demonstrations, taking them beyond the metropolitan area of the island.
Las Palmas march draws month of events to a close
Meanwhile, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the march made its way along Avenida José Mesa y López before culminating at the Santa Catalina Park. The demonstration, led by a banner reading “The sea unites us, Pride moves us”, marked the conclusion of a month of cultural and participatory activities under the programme ‘Where the air is free’. This preparatory programme was promoted by the Gam Collective and Chrysallis Canarias, with support from the City Council, and included film screenings and conferences on diversity, migration, and hate speech.
A call to protect hard-won rights
The Gran Canaria organisers stressed that Pride is an opportunity to highlight the laws that have been won and the construction of diverse societies. Representatives of Gam called on public entities and administrations to continue working towards a society where rights are not limited by sexual orientation or gender identity, reminding everyone that every advance achieved is built on shared commitment.
