New Direct Winter Routes from North America
Air Canada will operate direct flights between Tenerife and Toronto and Montreal starting in October. The Canadian airline will begin connecting the island with these two cities from this autumn, with an initial schedule covering the entire winter season between October and April. In total, there will be three weekly flights with Tenerife South Airport—two from Toronto and one from Montreal. This operation will enhance the island’s connectivity with the North American market and expand its network of international links.
Flight Schedule and Start Dates
According to the announced schedule, the Toronto route will commence on 25 October and will have two weekly frequencies. Flights to Tenerife will depart on Thursdays and Sundays, while return journeys will operate on Mondays and Fridays. The connection with Montreal will begin on 31 October. In this case, the outbound flight to the island will be on Saturdays, with the return flight departing on Sundays.
Boosting Strategic Tourism Markets
The opening of these non-stop routes will improve the arrival of travellers from Canada and the United States, two markets Tenerife considers strategic. The operation will also facilitate travel for people who reside on both sides of the Atlantic or maintain professional and academic links between Europe and North America.
Official Statements on Connectivity Strategy
From the Tenerife Island Council, the Vice President and Councillor for Tourism, Lope Afonso, framed this agreement within the strategy to reinforce the island’s air connectivity with priority source markets. In his assessment, the new operation represents an advance in the idea of positioning Tenerife as a reference point in the Atlantic for the North American market. In the same vein, the Managing Director of Tourism for Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, stated that the arrival of Air Canada provides a boost for the destination’s international profile. She explained that the connection is not limited to holiday tourism but could also open opportunities related to sectors such as business travel, corporate tourism, the audiovisual and cultural industry, and combined cruise itineraries.
Airline’s Expansion Plans and Passenger Growth
For his part, Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer and President of Cargo at Air Canada, framed the new route to Tenerife within the airline’s strategy of expanding destinations from the North American continent. Air Canada also notes that this will be its only direct connection from North America to Tenerife and highlights the island’s tourist appeal for its customers.
The passenger data included in the announcement points to growing traffic between Tenerife and North America. During 2024, the island received 38,119 passengers from Canada and the United States. Analysing the Canadian market separately, Tenerife recorded 8,026 passengers arriving from that country last year. This is nearly 5,000 more than in 2019, when 3,331 were recorded. The most relevant cities of origin were Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver.
In the case of the United States, the number of passengers who arrived in Tenerife in 2024 rose to 30,093, which is 5.6% more than in 2023 and almost double the figure for 2019. Among the main source cities are New York, Miami, Boston, Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco.
State-of-the-Art Aircraft for the Route
Air Canada plans to operate these routes with the Airbus A321XLR, one of the new models incorporated by the company. According to the information released, these aircraft have 182 seats divided into 14 Signature Class seats and 168 in Economy Class. The airline also highlights that the Business cabin includes lie-flat seats and that this model introduces a new interior standard for the company’s travel experience. The operation between Tenerife and Canada will therefore be supported by a next-generation fleet to cover this direct connection.
