Pope Sets Date for Historic First Visit to Tenerife

Historic Papal Visit Confirmed for June

The Pope’s visit to Tenerife now has a key date: it will be on Friday, 12 June, as part of his pastoral journey to Spain. The day will be marked by two major events in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: a tour through the city to greet residents and a massive Mass in the capital’s port.

City Tour to Bring Pope to the Public

The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, has confirmed that the Vatican has accepted the proposal for the pontiff to travel through several streets before the religious celebration. “The idea is for him to enter through a neighbourhood and tour the centre so that citizens can see him directly,” he said. Although the exact itinerary is not yet finalised—a decision that rests with the Vatican—the City Council is already working on organising a route that will allow thousands of people to see the Pope up close. This will be a historic moment: never before has a Pope visited Tenerife, making this day one of the most significant events for the city in decades.

Mass for Tens of Thousands at the Port

Following the city tour, the Pope will preside over the final Mass of his trip to Spain at the capital’s port. The event will be held at the old La Candelaria container terminal, next to the Tenerife Auditorium. Attendance is expected to be between 40,000 and 50,000 people, far exceeding other considered options like the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium, which was ruled out due to its smaller capacity.

Focus on Migration and Social Projects

The Pope’s visit to the Canaries responds to the desire of his predecessor, Francis, to highlight the migration reality on the islands. In this context, the pontiff could visit spaces linked to migrant reception, such as the Las Raíces centre in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, or social projects in neighbourhoods of the capital.

Full Pastoral Journey Across Spain

The pastoral journey will begin on 9 June in Madrid and continue to Barcelona, where the Pope will celebrate a Mass at the Sagrada Familia. He will then travel to Gran Canaria before culminating his visit in Tenerife. Although the definitive programme is not yet official, other stops on the island are under consideration, such as a visit to La Laguna or meetings with social groups. The possible presence of the Virgin of Candelaria at the final Mass is also being discussed, a decision that will depend on the ecclesiastical organisation.
