Council joins legal action against former mayor
Puerto de la Cruz Town Hall has announced it will appear as a private prosecutor in the judicial proceedings opened against former mayor Marco González, in which possible liability is being investigated for omission or mismanagement of the bathing areas at Playa Jardín during his time in office. The current mayor, Leopoldo Afonso, stressed that the decision is intended to “defend the public interest, clarify the facts and provide all available documentation”, distancing the municipal move from any value judgement ahead of the courts’ rulings.
Second independent test backs water safety
Against the backdrop of the environmental crisis affecting the town’s coastline, the Town Hall received results this Friday from a second independent laboratory. According to the council, these new tests once again certify that the water at Playa Jardín is “suitable and safe for bathing”, in full agreement with the first laboratory consulted by the municipality. However, the data clashes head-on with measurements taken by the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Public Health, which maintains health objections over the area.
239 favourable analyses and a pledge of cooperation
The figure of 239 favourable analyses represents the accumulated results from sampling commissioned by the council. Afonso stressed that they are not seeking “confrontation” with Public Health, which they regard as an ally, but rather aim to submit all technical documentation to “resolve the discrepancy through technical rigour”.
Seventh cleaning cycle under way
Coinciding with the municipal plenary session held on 14 August, the council has begun the seventh cleaning cycle at Playa Jardín. This scheduled intervention covers disinfection, sanitation and environmental maintenance work. The municipal strategy combines intensive analytical monitoring with on-the-ground operations, with the priority objective of restoring normality to the coastal area and securing its definitive reopening with full health guarantees.
